Not blogging again…

Posted in Blog, Rants, Apple, Tech@Home on January 25th, 2008 by Mark

Yeh, sorry, I’m not having an interesting time atm. MacWorld was a bit of a let down, the Air is a nice looking, ne stunning, lightweight laptop but it has fundamental drawbacks that even an ultra-portable user will eventually find inexcusable. 1 USB port? No FireWire? Oh please…

In other news, I bought 2 500GB drives for the Mac Pro because I’m sick of running out of hard drive space. I found out the Apple Wireless (Bluetooth) Keyboard works flawlessly with my Windows Mobile 6 HTC Touch. I also worked out how to use the Bluetooth phone system with sad same HTC Touch in a Land Rover Discovery 3 the other day and I have to say it’s DAMN cool :)

Wait, that all sounded vaguely interesting. Oh well, whatever…

Mac Fakeware/Scareware

This App (thumbs up to F-Secure for the post), would appear to have less than in-tact morals. While not a security risk per se, it is a nasty piece of work and as fake as a Hollywood breast implant. Avoid at all costs.

Calling out the ‘real’ Journalists

As a keen reader of the Macalope I accustomed to the acerbic dissection of Journalism surrounding the subject of Apple, Inc. Unlike Apple ‘fanboy’ articles that waft scented roses at Apple and Steve Jobs, the takes bullshit analysts and journalists articles apart and plainly points out exactly how much BS they are by countering them with raw fact and applying proper journalistic rules to them like what was done in the old days. They are often a joy to read.

Anyhoo it’s nice to see John Gruber getting in in the act, this particular dismemberment of this article on Fast Company, by Adam L. Penenberg, is a real piece of genius. Parts of it had me rolling in the aisle, not because it was funny but because of the inate stupidity of the original author.

Warning: get your facts right if you talk about Apple in public or you WILL get dressed down for it.

My last blog post…

Erm, until probably Friday, when I get paid. I have to register MarsEdit (and I will because having it there on the desktop and a handy OS X app makes mr blog more!!).

Why won’t I just use the web interface that’s been so excellently crafted into Wordpress? Well simply because the rich editor doesn’t work in Safari and it involves doing to much clocking to get to it. I think Wordpress needs a ‘POST’ button in the admin tools at the side bar.

While you are waiting in the lobby for your next flight you might want to muse these:

More when I return (I hope).

How cool is Salling Clicker?

Posted in Apple, Tech@Home on December 11th, 2007 by Mark

Salling Clicker

This piece of software *rocks*. I bought it (as Sony Ericsson Clicker) years back when I had a Sony Ericsson t68i and I love it even more now than I did back then. If you have a compatible Bluetooth phone and like chilling out away from the computer to watch a movie or, well anything, then this is for you. I am using the standard installed version on the T-Mobile Touch (Windows Mobile 6) I got last week and the combination of the touch screen and Salling Clicker is a total winner. I have a customizable universal remote for both my Macs. I mostly use it at the moment to control my iTunes machine (iMac G4/800). I can navigate around the playlists in iTunes, control playback, it’s like having a iPod stereo system. Also it allows you to put the computer to sleep. A REALLY neat feature I struck upon last night was I made a cell call on the phone while I was connected to the iMac and the music faded down as I picked the phone up… and back in when I closed the call. Damn that is so cool…

By default 3.5.1 comes with controls for all the major Apple apps, and Powerpoint and a few others to boot. Fancy kicking back and flicking through your weeks video podcasts while you sit away from your computer? No problem. You don’t even have to go back to the computer to check and read your e-mail!

Oh and it’s also available for Windows… I can’t vouch for it there though as I only ever use the OS X version.
